Bali is a small island with different types of beaches. Some consist of big, sharp rocks, created by corals or lava while others are covered with white, yellow and grey or black send. We are presenting to you here only the most beautiful ones
The most important thing for us is it to determine if you are a good swimmer, beginner or non-swimmer. Next,we need to know if you are visiting beach alone or with the kids. We will certainly help you selecting the best place for swimming that suits your needs.
Our presentation of Nusa Lembongan was very detailed; describing not only a very beautiful coast, but also all other interesting places on this small island.
For a day trip, our recommendation is to combine visit to temple with time reserved for the beach. It is a great pleasure to experience the sunset at Jimbaran, Tanah Lot or Ulu Watu. It is, however, to pay attention to something very important whenever we talk about Bali beaches: high and low tide will determine when swimming is possible.
Dreamland Beach
Dreamland beach is a must to visit, whether you own a surf board or not. This surfer’s paradise is located on the Southeastern coast of Bali. Surfers are allowed at all times, while inexperienced swimmers should stay on the beach, because the ocean currents here are dangerous.
You’ll be able to get food and rent a pool lounger here. Spending time on the beach and getting to Ulu Watu temple to observe the sunset is ideal combo.
Nusa Lembongan Beach
Lembongan is a small and very pretty island, only 7 km away from the main island of Bali. It is well known for its tranquil sandy bays, which are offering great opportunity for romantic getaway. This island has very little in common with Bali.
It is dry, rocky and there are no rice fields. Only cacti, snakes and lizards are enjoying themselves here. Only a few plants can grow here, like corn, mango and peanuts. Only hardy plants survive on this dry soil in the absence of spring water.
The hanging bridge that connects Lembongan with slightly smaller island, Nusa Ceningan is on the Southern side of the island.
If you want to see all of beautiful places, you’ll have to stay more than one day. For these two islands, we definitely recommend a multiple day trip which will allow you to visit the land and the sea. The visitors here have a feeling as though they are bask in the past for at least 20 years. This charming island doesn’t have any big hotels or mass tourism facilities.
The very special attraction is located in the village of Desa Lembongan. It is called The Rumah Goa and it means "Cave house". It is actually a labyrinth made of many rooms and hallways. It was built between 1961 and 1976. It has seven entrances, three air circulation systems and a small well.
The other great attraction is temple Pura Segara in the village of Jungut Batu.
Nusa Ceningan is a small island only 4 km long and 2,5 km wide. The population here is mainly Balinese and they make a living by growing algae. Algae are planted in the shallow waters and a month later they are ready to be harvested. For those interested, visit to the underwater plantation can be organized. Algae are used in production of food and cosmetics. After dried, they are transported to Bali and processed further.
Available overnight accommodations in this area are ample, from luxury villas with stunning views, to sleeping on the beach. The traffic is almost nonexistent and this little island is truly oasis of peace and tranquility.
Sanur Beach
This beach is on the coast next to village of Sanur, on the West side of the island and it is several kilometers long. The sand here is golden yellow and consists of small coral particles that fly on windy days. The beach is covered with thousands of small shells and snails that you can collect. Ocean current is very weak here therefore only tiny waves show on the surface. It is perfect for children and non-swimmers.
The coast is, actually, a line-up of twenty little bays, the last one covered in black sand. All of these small beaches are cleaned daily and you can use them all. In Indonesia, beaches belong to the people and hotels are not allowed to fence them for their guests only use.
There are no private beaches on Bali as it’s the case in Europe. The rich and the poor are equal here, at least when this matter is concerned. The coral reef is only a few hundred meters away from the shore and you can walk to it when the tide is low. When the tide is high you have to rent a boat, or simply swim to it.
While taking this walk, you can watch a variety of sea creatures, especially starfish. They are mostly red and black or orange and if you find them throw them back to the deep waters. This is the best way to preserve them. Behind the coral reef water becomes deep and ocean color changes to dark blue.
The sea shore is followed by the concrete path, so you can walk safely or ride a bike. Balinese people prefer to ride a motorbike at slow speed.

Balangan Beach
To get to this beach you’ll have to cross the green Uluwatu peninsula. In doing so, you’ll be passing by local villagers and their cattle and goats grazing calmly. This is a typical Balinese village full of smiling people moving around while doing their chores. Balangan is small and very quiet beach on the south of Bali.
There are few shack-restaurants called Warunga right on the beach. Reaching this beach by car is really easy. Going to the beach filled with palm trees only takes a few steps from the parking lot. The beach is few kilometers long. Ocean currents are strong and waves are high here. Therefore, it is recommended only for really good swimmers. When conditions are bad, this beach is marked with red flags in order to notify the public.
Low tide is perfect for a walk on the beach, where you can see creatures’ crawling from their hiding places and enjoying the sun in small puddles of water. The Dremland beach is great for a stroll on the long white sandy beach when water recedes, while sand massages your feet. We call it “a free pedicure a la Balangan spa”.
This is our favorite beach, as well as the most beautiful one.

Geger Beach
The Geger beach is stunningly white sandy beach.
If you follow the highway in the direction of Nusa Dua peninsula, you will have to turn onto small street on your left. The ocean here is much calmer than in Kuta and swimming is easy and enjoyable. Sometimes in the afternoon, though, the ocean current becomes strong and an inquiry with locals about is it safe getting into water is a must. You can surf throughout day with no limitations.
Beyond the beach and away from the ocean there are 4 and 5 star hotels nested in well made parks. Regardless of its beauty, this beach is not very popular. Loungers and beach umbrellas are available for rent.
You will be able to observe a simple life of the Balinese people here. You will see them working on the shore as well as at the sea. You can watch them collecting, drying and preparing algae to be shipped to the cosmetic and pharmaceutical factories. The fishermen here have hard life and live in small huts. They work all day long. You will have to go through narrow passages between tall rocky banks to reach small bays with sandy beaches.
Above the water you can see the big rock called „Blow Hole“. When waves hit the rock water gushes through the fissure creating a fountain effect. You must be very careful because the water jet here is very powerful and it can cause injury. At the other side of the cave is yet another beautiful sandy beach with shallow waters. When the tide is low, crushed corals can be found at the surface, so you ought to watch your steps.
The temple was built on the top of the huge rock. When you stand at it, you can see the Nikko hotel complex.

Kuta Beach
Following the line of the city of Kuta there is a beach of the same name. Waves here are high and ocean currents are strong, so swimming should be avoided. However, it is perfect for surfers who congregate at this beach in large numbers.
This beach is full of locals and tourist seeking short love affair lasting as long as the vacation. This promenade means that no one, old or young, stays lonely for long. Tourists come here from abroad as well as other parts of Indonesia. Other islands are more puritan. The liberal policy about clothing and nakedness makes Bali attractive for visitors.
There are restaurants, souvenir shops, and disco clubs right across from Kuta beach. The local “Hard Rock Cafe Bali“ is there, too. You can eat, drink and spend money here, night and day.
If you are looking for peace and quiet you have to go to the west, to Seminjak beach. Seminjak is filled with family friendly hotels with pools, situated in parks full of flowers and trees.
Unfortunately, the currents here are also strong and send is not white but rather grey.

Lovina Beach
This beach isn’t well known and it is on the North of the island. The beach is covered in black sand originating from Agnung volcano cooled lava. At high noon it’s hard to walk on this beach, because the sand becomes too hot.
The first time you step into the water here, the feeling is slightly unpleasant, but it changes quickly to pleasure when you start swimming. Ocean currents are absent and waves are high only during very windy days. This is non-swimmers and children’s paradise. The beach edge is covered with trees with large leaves that protects well from the sun.
This is a quiet area and there are plenty of spots for everyone to enjoy it. Rice fields and small vineyards are right behind the beach. A few hundred meters away is the fisherman’s village full of hospitable locals. The thermal springs with healing, volcanic water and highest waterfall on the island are only a few kilometers away.
Yet, nothing compares to the main attraction: the dolphins coming to the shallow waters at every sunrise. It would be a shame to miss this unique experience and unforgettable opportunity to enjoy these amazing sea creatures.

Nusa Dua Beach
Nusa Dua is a well known hotel complex built in 1971. After this complex success, many other luxury hotels have been built, surrounded with stunningly beautiful parks. Tropical climate of the Bali island allows year round tourism.
Monsoon season takes place between November and March and it is raining every day. It only lasts for an hour or two, but the rain is pouring every time. Thanks to the rain and high humidity, variety of flowers and plants are growing extremely well. Tall palm trees, wild mangroves, fragrance of flowering trees and orchids, blue ocean and golden sand, all together, are turning your vacation into a visit to the paradise.
Swimming is great for children and adults equally. There are no ocean currents and the waves are low. The water is crystal clear and great for snorkeling and diving. South and North ends of the beach are reserved for surfers because the waves are high.
If all of this isn’t enough, there are luxury golf courses nearby.

Nyang Nyang Beach
This beach is one of the secrets of Bali.
The narrow, winding busy street, going uphill and downhill, will take you to this beach located at Nusa Dua peninsula. While you are passing by, you can see grazing cows and gouts and villagers going about their daily life. After driving for few kilometers you will take even smaller street on your left. You have to be careful not to miss it.
Then you will be going through the small forest. In that forest, filled with exotic flowers, hidden bungalows are built for those seeking to stay incognito and want complete relaxation. At the end of the field you will find a small restaurant with the pool and one of the best views on the whole island.
Only couple of hundreds of meters further, you can see pure white, sandy beach that looks like it goes forever. The ocean is crystal clear and turquoise blue with white crested, thundering waves.
Regardless of its beauty there are no tourists here and only visitors are workers harvesting algae. The main reason visitors are not here is 550 steps you have to climb to get to the water. Steps are hidden, steep and overgrown with greenery. If careful and with older kids, it is doable. The biggest problem is presented by mosquitoes hidden in the greenery. Please use repellent to protect your skin. Rare visitor are welcomed by mosquitoes as a great source of fresh blood.
This beach is good for swimming only if the waves are low.

Padang-Padang Beach
This very beautiful, small, sandy bay is located close to the Ulu Watu temple. It is surrounded by steep, high boulders, overgrown with plants and full of monkeys playing and fighting.
Upon arrival, from the parking lot you are getting into narrow passage and climbing down the steep steps. Small water temple is located at the exit of the passage. The wall built from yellow-red stone, covered with greenery, is on the left side. The coral sandy beach is on the right. The beach is covered with huge rocks and small caves used in making artful photography. The high tide is great for swimming. Low tide is better for investigating the wondrous world of corals and small sea creatures. But, be aware of sharp corals and small sea urchins hiding in the crevices and wear plastic sandals to protect your feet.
Due to popularity of the movies such as “Eat, pray, love” many people visit this beach and this number is continuously growing. Regardless of the recent changes we hope that this beach will not become a mass tourism spot and that it will preserve its beauty and charm.
